Sep 13, 2017 1:00 PM Halimah Yacob has been declared Singapore’s eighth president on Wednesday after a “walkover” election that saw no vote after other contenders no longer ran for the position. Mrs. Yacob, 63, had been the only candidate deemed eligible to stand in the country’s Elections Department, having held a key public position as Speaker of Parliament for three years. The other two contenders, Salleh Marican and Farid Khan, were both denied eligibility, having fallen short of a constitutional rule that required any candidate from the private sector to have led a company with shareholder equity of at least 500 million Singapore dollars (372 million dollars). Following the announcement, Yacob thanked her supporters in a speech, calling it “a proud moment for Singapore, for multiculturalism and multiracialism.” Mrs. Yacob is Singapore’s first Malay president in 47 years, and the first woman to occupy the president’s office. Whi...

Sep 11, 2017 1:45 PM A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday dismissed the suit by Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, challenging the validity the process of recalling him by his constituents. According to Punch, the case was dismissed by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba who ordered that the Independent National Electoral Commission “shall proceed with the recall process”. The judgment effectively terminated the earlier ex parte order made by another judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice John Tsoho, on July 6, 2017, directing parties to maintain status quo. However, Justice Dimgba noted that the process shall only proceed subject to the service of the petition, the full list and signatures of persons in support of the recall process. The judge noted that the 90 days period within which the Constitution ordered the INEC to conduct a referendum on receiving the recall petition had been paused since June 23, when Melaye commenced the suit. He ordered that the period ...

Sep 11, 2017 6:01 AM Thousands of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Sunday evening formed a human barricade around the Afaraukwu palace of Nnamdi Kanu’s father in Umuahia to prevent heavily armed soldiers from arresting their leader. News Express gathered that the soldiers stormed the palace in an armoured tank and about three Hilux vans loaded with soldiers in a bid to arrest Kanu. Panic-stricken residents of the area were said to be running helter-skelter during the invasion which Kanu’s father, Eze Israel Kanu, described as shocking and unwarranted. Nnamdi Kanu told newsmen that he has not been invited by any authority and wondered why the Gestapo style was employed to re-arrest him. While the siege lasted, it was learnt that three persons were shot and scores wounded. Kanu, in an interview, said the soldiers were shooting sporadically as they approached his father’s compound, causing panic among residents of the area. He said they w...

Sep 11, 2017 5:20 AM The embattled Minister of Women Affairs, Amina Alhassan has threatened to expose Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Elrufai and his role in Chibok girls kidnapping. The Minister said she was surprised that a dirty character like Elrufai could even have the gut to comment against her preference for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for 2019 Presidential race. She said, there are lot of things Nigerians needs to know about the planning and execution of Chibok girl kidnapping because those behind it will be unmasked very soon. The intention was very obvious, to defame and blackmail PDP and Jonathan out of power. The Minister became angry by the comment credited to Elrufai where he was quoted as saying that Buhari was severely warned not to appoint Amina Alhassan as Minister. Mallam Elrufai said Amina Alhassan’s leaved Video, an indication that she has never been loyal to President Buhari from day one, noting that her loyalty lies with someone who is not even ready to...
