Report: Nigeria’s signed budget still being amended

Jul 16, 2017 7:20 AM Nigeria’s 2017 budget, signed into law by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo a month ago, has still not been finalised and is being amended due to disagreements between parliament and the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter said. Any delays to government spending could hobble recovery in Africa’s largest economy, now in its second year of recession. The 2017 budget, still not finalised in the second half of the year, was meant to spark that return to growth after the first downturn in a quarter of a century. The presidency and senior lawmakers had also promised that it would avoid the severe delays in passing the previous year’s budget, which was signed off in May 2016 — five months into the budget year. Jul 15, 2017 9:00 AM An operative of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, killed a man and shot a police sergeant in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital on Friday, July 14. According to Daily Nigerian, the incident occurred when Jigawa Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, sought reinforcement from the NSCDC personnel after clash with members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW. NURTW touts descended on the FRSC officials, set ablaze their operational van, following impounding of some of their vehicles for failure to install speed limiters. ?As soon as the Civil Defence officers arrived at the scene, they began beating everybody around. One of them started shooting despite the fact that the police asked him not to. He shot dead one the bystanders and a police sergeant,? said a witness.
