UN considers sanctions to fight Libya slave trade

Nov 29, 2017 9:44 AM France's ambassador to the UN has urged the Security Council to impose sanctions on the people involved in Libya's slave trade of African refugees and migrants. Francois Delattre's comments come as human trafficking in Libya has become a burning topic since a CNN investigation produced footage of West Africans being sold at slave markets in November. "France will propose to assist the sanctions committee … in identifying responsible individuals and entities for trafficking through Libyan territory," he told the council on Tuesday. "We count upon support of the members of the council to make headway to that end." Nov 29, 2017 8:19 AM A protest against slavery in Libya has been announced to hold on Friday in Lagos.This follows global outcry on alleged slave trade boom, killings of migrants and human trafficking going on in the country. The protest tagged ‘movement against second slavery’ would be held on Friday at the United Nations High commission Office. 31 Migrants Fall Into Mediterranean, Eaten By Sharks

Nov 29, 2017 2:06 AM SAN FRANCISCO, November 28, (THEWILL) – 31 people have been reported dead and another 40 missing when Sharks attacked migrants who fell from overcrowded boats in the Mediterranean. According to the Libyan Navy said, it arrived the scene of accident and found two upturned boats that were headed for Europe. Many of the bodies had bite marks from deadly blue sharks, with some of the killer fish spotted nearby, the navy said on its Facebook page. It described how terrified survivors were found scurrying to get on top of the upturned hulls away from the sharks saying three children and 18 women were among the dead. “We found dozens of bodies floating in the water and two small boats with hundreds of people crowded on board and others holding on or trying to climb aboard to escape from the sharks,” the post read.
