A five-man gang suspected to be the armed robbers terrorising Kabusa, a suburb of Abuja and its environs, has been apprehended. The suspects were arrested on May 28, by a combined team of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), as well as officers from the Apo Division of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command. Three days after the suspects’ arrest, a suspected member of a “onechance” syndicate, was apprehended by policemen on patrol at Karmo, a suburb of Abuja.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Usen Omorodion, who made the disclosures in statements forwarded to Inside Abuja, gave the names of the suspects as follows: Ibezim Chibike, Gideon Anih, Michael Musa, Destiny Aloga, and Sadiq Abdu. Omorodion noted that the arrest of the suspects was a culmination of a discreet investigation by officers of the Command, who had been on the trail of the gang. Items recovered from the suspects, according to the PPRO, included jewellery worth over N400, 000, a Bareta pistol, 20 handsets, and 2 live ammunition. Omorodion said: “The FCT Police Command arrested 5 suspected armed robbers terrorizing Kabusa and environs. The robbers were arrested on 28/05/2017 at about 4pm at Kabusa.
“The suspects were arrested as a follow up to an ongoing investigation into the series of robbery operations of the syndicate by a special team of policemen from Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS and anti-robbery officers from Apo division.
The team was led by Apo Divisional Police Officer, CSP Yahaya Jelani and the suspects have confessed to the various crimes. “The police team, who has been on the trail of the gang, launched a massive attack on the gang.” He further disclosed that the feat had attracted the commendation of the FCT Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Musa Kimo, who encouraged the officers with “ComPol (Commissioner of Police) handshake”.
While assuring residents of the Command’s combat readiness to curb crime in the FCT and its environs, Kimo directed that the suspects be transferred to SARS, for further investigation. On the ‘one-chance’ suspect, Omorodion said one Anthony Chukwueke, and others still at large, specialise in dispossessing their victims of cash and other valuables, after hypnotising them.
He said during his last unsuccessful outing, the suspect allegedly dispossessed his victim, one Maryam Okon, of N200, 000, after making her unconscious. Omorodion said: “A member of a notorious 419 syndicate which specializes in picking unsuspecting passengers to unknown destination where they defraud them of monies and other possession have been arrest ed by eagled- eyed police patrol team attached to Karmo division. “The incident occurred on the 31/05/2017 at about 4.30pm when one Maryam Okon ‘F’ boarded a taxi from Area 3 to Mpape with two other male occupants .
While in the vehicle, she engaged with the occupants in a discussion about dollar in their possession that needed to be changed. “She then parted with the some of N200, 000 after being hypnotized. On realization of this, she raised an alarm before the suspects could flee the scene and they were apprehended. Although members of the public attempted to lynch the suspects, the police teams were able to rescue the suspect from the mob and situation taken under control.”
