August 29, 2017 marks what would have been the 59th birthday of pop star legend Michael Jackson — and his daughter used social media to pay tribute to her late dad.
Nineteen-year-old Paris has stepped into the spotlight more and more in the 8 years since the King of Pop’s sudden and unexpected death. Her dad, one of the most popular entertainers the world has ever seen, famously kept his children out of the public eye when they were young.
Tragically, the pop icon died of cardiac arrest on June 25, 2009 at his home in Los Angeles when he was only 50 years old. Much like David Bowie, Michael was an pioneer in the music industry taken far too soon.
In many ways, Paris and her 2 brothers are living reminders of Michael’s legacy, as are the many current artists that his career inspired musically.
Scroll through to read Paris’ emotional tribute to her late dad — and to see how grown up the pop star’s only daughter is now!

Paris Jackson was born on April 3, 1998 to Michael and his second wife Debbie Rowe, a nurse that the pop star met while being treated for vitiligo.
Paris was one of 2 children born from that marriage (along with her older brother Michael Joseph Jackson Jr.). She is Michael’s only daughter.

Michael’s 3rd child, son Prince Michael II (once known as “Blanket”), was born in 2002 to the pop star and an unidentified surrogate mother.
Unlike his older sister, Prince Michael (now 15 years old and going by the name Bigi) lives a life out of the public eye.

In March 2017, Paris even signed a modeling contract with IMG Models.
In the years since Paris has become more of a public personality, she’s shared plenty of throwback photos of herself as a child — in stark contrast to the years that her father spent shrouding his kids in blankets and other masks to cover their faces.
But in all this time, the teenager has shared relatively few photos of her family.

In honor of Michael’s August 29th birthday, Paris shared a sweet throwback photo of herself as a young girl with her dad.
In the picture, young Paris and her dad are sharing a sweet kiss. Michael is dressed in one of his most iconic outfits, complete with the single silver-sequined white glove he was known for.
But it’s Paris’s emotional and heartfelt caption alongside the picture that has everyone talking.

Paris captioned the intimate photo:
birthday wishes to the love of my life, the one person who showed me what passion truly was, the one that gave me solid morals to live by and how to dream. i will never feel love again the way i did with you.

you are always with me and i am always with you. though i am not you, and you are not me, i know with all of my being that we are one.
and our souls will never change in that way.
thank you for the magic, forever and always.

This isn’t the first time that the teen has gotten emotional and candid while discussing her father on a public platform.
On June 25, 2015, Paris shared another set of throwback photos, in honor of the 6 year anniversary of Michael’s death:
so it’s been 6 years & every day has been hell without you. i miss you more than anything, tickle bunny. hope you’re hearing all of my prayers from up there… i love you to infinity & beyond.

On August 27, 2017, Paris gave a powerful speech at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. When TMZ caught up with Paris at LAX the next night, they asked how she thought Michael would feel about her inspiring words.
“Proud, hopefully,” Paris replied.

Given how grown up Paris is now, it’s almost too easy to forget that she’s just a young woman who lost her dad far too early.
But I think it’s safe to say that she’s made Michael very proud in the years since his death.
